Brave Brothers
BraveBrothers.org – Suicide prevention education for men who hear voices.
Globally, men account for roughly 3 out of every 4 deaths by suicide, and the risks rises sharply for people living with schizophrenia. Studies consistently show that 5-6% of people with schizophrenia die by suicide and around one-fifth attempt it at least once.
Behind those start numbers are real people – fathers, brothers, mates – many of whom cope daily with intrusive voices. Evidence – based peer movements such as international Hearing Voices Network and Paranoia UK remind us that “voice hearers” can lead rich, connected lives, but only when stigma gives way to understanding and practical skills.
What Brave Brothers is doing?
BraveBrothers.org was founded by men with lived experience of voices who refused to let silence be the last word. For Men’s Health Week the team has developed Suicide – Prevention Masterclass designed specifically for:
- Men who hear voices or experience other psychosis – related phenomena.
- Friends, family and clinicians who want to respond with confidence – not fear.
- Community leaders ready to create safer spaces for tough conversations.
The training weaves together the latest suicide – intervention frameworks “Conversations about loss and Mental Health” with peer – led “Responding to Voices” techniques.
Participants leave with:
- A step-by-step safety planning tool tailored to voice hearers.
- Strategies to transform hostile or command voices into collaborative dialogues.
Why it matters
- Early adulthood is the highest – risk period for both first – episode psychosis and suicide; timely skills can be lifesaving.
- Schizophrenia affects roughly 24 million people worldwide. Even a small reduction in suicide rates would save thousands of lives each year.
- Peer – education models reduce self – stigma, boost hope and cost a fraction or inpatient care.
